So Rafa’s at it again! This time, in his appearance on Football Focus, yesterday he introduced to English football another hitherto unheard of analogy, the “short blanket”!
If you have a short blanket and pull it up your feet you get cold. If you pull it down to cover your feet your upper body gets cold. This is the same with a team if you attack too much the defence is exposed … you get the rest.
These days Rafa has developed an entertaining knack of slipping these into conversation which leave the media flailing about non plussed as it is a side track from their own clichés. However I don’t understand the incredulity and p*ss taking, the man’s point is perfectly clear, as clear as priest on top of hill of sugar! God bless and nice to see him back and in good humour?
Blankets aside Rafa played a fairly straight bat suggesting that Hicks and Gillett were eventually found to be out of their depth at Liverpool and disconnected from the way football is run in this country. He also, when asked if he would consider retuning to Liverpool, was complementary about Kenny’s influence. Will Rafa return if the job became vacant again? At this moment I doubt it, it would be just too much, why go back and what messages would it send out?
Rafa’s complements about Kenny Dalglish were the latest in a trend of Liverpool managers, past and present, bigging each other up. After Thursday Kenny spoke of Roy Hodgson’s contribution to our ongoing UEFA Cup run.
“I’m only here managing in the Europa League because of the work done before me by the players and Roy.”
Agreed, HRH’s contribution should not be ignored but also there has been a marked change in the players and that is surely down to Kenny? Said Thursday’s goal scorer Dirk Kuyt
“…. we are not satisfied with the results we have been getting. We are hungry to keep progressing and we are working hard in training. It’s good that we have had six games unbeaten but we won’t be satisfied until we have more.
We have much more confidence. We have had a lot of clean sheets and defensively we are much stronger. That gives you confidence up front. We have got players to come back and on Sunday, Luis can play. We have got some strength.”
Which brings us neatly to today and West Ham. It’s interesting that this is on Sky bearing in mind the Channel’s new found hard line, politically correctness over the treatment of woman. However, the fact that West Ham’s owners have made a substantial part of their fortune through peddling porn has conveniently been forgotten!
Anyway, blatant hypocrisy aside, after the start to the season who would have thought that we would be after our third consecutive away victory? Will this continue? West Ham must have been buoyed by their comeback against West Brom last week and their Cup win against Burnley shortly after however we’ve won our last four against them and won easily at Anfield earlier this season. Add to this the fact that we are a stronger and more confident side and hopefully we can continue our good form and press those above us.
Team wise, as Dirk suggested above we have Luis Suarez to call upon after being cup tied during the week. Steven Gerrard may return however Agger, Johnson and Kelly will be subject to last minute decisions which of course is worrying as all of them are defenders. One also wonders just what Kenny will decide to do with Joe Cole after Thursday? Perhaps he will try and play a “man management ace” and take a punt and field him against his former club in the hope that it fires him up?
Prediction? I guess it depends of which version of West Ham turn up however, whatever we get I feel we are more then capable of getting a result albeit way from home. 3-1 and Luis Suarez to make his mark!
